HONDA ENGINES – NEW METHODOLOGY OF MEASUREMENT

Honda is the first engine manufacturer indicating the power of the industry engines in Net kW (engine power) in compliance with the test procedure of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J1349. At the same time the indications of torque (measured in “Net” setting too), fuel consumption (changed from g/kW.h to L/h) and fuel tank volume are changed as well.
Honda decided to apply the same method of engine performance rating across all the product lines: cars, motorcycles and power equipment. Consistent to this policy, Honda rates all the industry engines with Net power kW (HP) in compliance with the test procedure of the Society of Automotive Engineers SAE J1349. The change of the Net power measurement means that the Honda engines are tested with standard serial air filter and serial exhaust muffler. In connection with the new measurement standard according to SAE J1349 there haven’t been made any design or mechanical changes of the engines, no reduction of power or other parameters has been made; only a new, more objective method of measurement was chosen. Therefore you, the customers, should require performance data according to this objective standard from other manufacturers too to be able to compare the real performance of the engine.
